2x Game Speed: when to switch it on
Leave 2x on while crossing the world map, doing side missions or farming, and turn it off for first boss attempts where charge and follow-up windows matter.
2x Game Speed is the only feature in the Enhanced Remaster that changes how the game plays rather than how it looks, and it is the one most people will use every session.
What it is
A toggle that doubles the pace of play. The store describes it as letting you "enjoy the game at a more comfortable pace", which is a polite way of saying the 2010 design has a lot of walking in it. It is not a difficulty setting and it does not change damage, charge times as a mechanic, or enemy behaviour.
Where it earns its keep
- World map traversal. Basel's map is a hex grid you cross tile by tile between missions. This is the single biggest time sink in the game and the main reason people stall in the middle chapters.
- Backtracking for side missions. Optional missions routinely send you back through districts you have already cleared.
- Shopping and menu loops. Selling materials and reassembling guns is a repetitive loop that doubles cleanly.
- Farming runs. If you are farming Arena ranks or synthesis materials, doubling the clock halves the wall time — see scrapped missile farming.
Where it hurts
Combat is timing-based. Charge meters, Hero Action windows and the moment a knockdown lands all happen on a clock, and doubling that clock halves your reaction window. Two places where this bites:
- First attempts at a boss. You are reading tells for the first time; doubled speed removes the half-second you needed.
- Any fight where you rely on Smackdown or Bonus Shots. The follow-up window is short, and it gets shorter.
The pattern that works is to leave it on while travelling and turn it off when a fight starts going wrong — not because the game demands it, but because the toggle is a single button and there is no penalty for using it either way.
A sensible default
| Situation | Setting |
|---|---|
| Crossing the world map | 2x |
| Side-mission cleanup | 2x |
| Menu and shop work | 2x |
| First boss attempt | 1x |
| Farming a familiar Arena rank | 2x |
| Anything with a timed follow-up you keep missing | 1x |
What it is not
- Not a skip. Cutscenes and dialogue are not what the feature is for, and there is no claim in the store listing that it changes them.
- Not a replacement for New Game Plus. If you want to replay the game faster, the difficulty ladder and carried-over gear on the New Game Plus page do more for that than the clock.
- Not platform-specific. It is part of the DLC on the Steam release, so it appears with the other new options once the DLC is installed and active.
