Resonance of Fate

Chapter 1: Lucia, the Rose and Tar Man

Quick answer

Two missions from Theresa, a flower to place in Lucia on level 6, Red Energy Hex x4 plus a Red Station Hex, and Tar Man at the end of the dungeon.

Chapter 1 is where Resonance of Fate stops holding your hand. It opens with a cutscene, hands you two missions from Cardinal Theresa, sends you to a new dungeon on another floor, and ends with the first boss that punishes anyone still using the machine gun as a damage weapon.

The Garden Party requires visiting during the day; the guard at the door turns you away at night. Inside, a cutscene plays and you receive the Flower. On the way out the guard also hands you Red Energy Hex x4 and a Red Station Hex — your first coloured hexes, and the first chance to power a terminal rather than just open a path.

A Battlefield Revisited is the actual chapter: take the flower to Lucia on Level 6 and place it on the grave. Getting there means using the coloured hexes to open the route, riding Core Lift 1 down to Level 4, crossing southeast to the lift that goes up to Level 6, then opening the ruins of Lucia with the appropriate hexes.

The dungeon

Lucia is multi-area and is the first dungeon that asks you to fight through rather than walk through. The end of the route is a short sequence of tiles where each tile is an encounter; clearing one does not return you to the map, so you fight the sequence back to back.

That is the chapter's real test. If you arrive with an empty Bezels pool and no Magazine Case, the sequence will wear you down. Arrive with Hero Actions banked and it is comfortable.

The boss

The chapter boss is Tar Man. Like most early bosses, the fight is about whether you understand scratch conversion: build scratch with the machine gun, convert with the handgun, and use Hero Actions to close distance instead of walking into charge range.

If the boss is surviving your handgun conversions, the problem is usually the handgun's attack power rather than your level. A cheap sight and a barrel upgrade do more at this point than two levels of grinding.

What to do while you are here

  • Check the bulletin board before leaving the city. Chapter 1 opens several optional missions including the Power Station Checkup, which is a prerequisite for chapter 2's main location being open.
  • Spend the 20,000 rubies deliberately. A Magazine Case and a sight are the two purchases that pay off immediately.
  • Do the Arena tutorials if you skipped them. They are free and they cover the four mechanics this chapter assumes.

Chapter 1 in the achievement data

44.2% of players complete chapter 1, against 55.7% who finish the prologue. That gap is the game's first filter, and it happens before the systems have been explained properly. If you are stuck here, you are in the same place roughly one in five owners stopped — the beginner guide is written for exactly this point.
